  • Exams are advertised in the New Haven Register at least 3 times and other smaller local newspapers such as The Inner City Newspaper. Police and Fire positions are also advertised on Comcast Cable in the New Haven area and on Channel 20 in East Haven. All exams and vacant positions are also posted on a bulletin board outside the Civil Service Office and filed with the Town Clerk. Vacant positions and exams (hopefully) will be posted online.

  • When a position becomes vacant and there is not a valid Eligibility List for the position, the Town will then advertise and hold an examination. At that time you must complete a job application and submit it to the Civil Service Commission before the deadline.

  • The list is valid for a period of up to 2 years.

  • Every applicant that receives a passing score (usually 60 and above) is placed on a list in rank order-the highest score to the lowest score (Eligibility List). The names of the three candidates with the highest scores will be submitted for an interview (Certified List).

  • Most exams consist of a written exam made up of multiple-choice questions. Some positions such as Police Officer and Firefighter also have a physical agility test and an oral interview that is graded.

  • No. You must take an exam with the East Haven Civil Service Commission to be considered for a position in East Haven.

  • No, each vacant position has its own requirements that warrant a separate exam. You must take a separate exam for each position. For example, if you take an exam for a Secretary I, Grade Level 9 position and a Secretary III, Grade Level 11 positions opens up you must also apply for that position and take that exam.
